Ethiopian Blossom
An adventure documented by Alice & Nick
01
The Arrival
When we arrived in the Kaffa highlands, coffee's birthplace, the morning mist clung to mountainsides where wild coffee trees have grown for centuries. Almaz was already there, hands wrapped around a steaming cup from the previous harvest. "Welcome," she said. "Let me show you how we've been doing this for 800 years." We'd read about Ethiopia's coffee origins, but standing among trees planted by her grandmother, breathing air thick with blossom and wood smoke, we understood: this wasn't a farm we were visiting. It was a living archive.
02
The Process
Almaz led us through rows of coffee trees, some older than anyone can remember, still producing beans in the highland forest where coffee first evolved. "Each cherry is picked by hand," she explained, demonstrating the gentle twist that releases only the ripest fruit. "The trees tell us when they're ready you just have to know how to listen." At these elevations, cherries ripen slowly, developing a complexity shaped by volcanic soil and generations of careful stewardship. The natural processing that follows honours the same patience: nothing here is rushed, because nothing here ever needed to be.
03
The Community
That evening, Selamawit invited us to coffee ceremony a three-hour ritual that has bound Ethiopian communities together for a thousand years. Three rounds, each with its own meaning: awakening, transformation, blessing. "Once ceremony begins, you stay until completion," she told us. "Coffee is not drink. Coffee is medicine for loneliness." By the third round, the strangers sharing our circle weren't strangers anymore. This wasn't hospitality as we knew it. It was social technology a system for manufacturing community where none existed before. And we'd completely forgotten it in the West.

The Invitation
Our story with Ethiopian coffee is still being written. Solomon, our founding partner in Bonga, is building the supply chain that will connect you directly to the farmers and communities we met in the Kaffa highlands. Things move on their own timeframe in Ethiopia, and we respect that. In the meantime, Ethiopian Blossom is sourced from suppliers who share our values: hand-picked, carefully processed, and rooted in the same highland traditions Almaz showed us. When that direct connection is ready, you'll be the first to know. Until then, taste what drew us to coffee's birthplace and understand why we're not leaving until the full story is told.
